Sofia Airport – Elevating Possibilities

Sofia Airport /SOF/ is the largest international airport in Bulgaria and a strategic site of national significance playing a key role in the economic development of the country.

As of 31st of March 2024, Bulgaria is a member of the Schengen area via air and sea borders. Sofia Airport has successfully passed several European Union inspections, contributing to the country’s acceptance into Schengen.

From 2021, SOF Connect is the concessionaire of Sofia Airport for the next 35 years. During the concession period, the company foresees investments of 624 million EUR for the development and modernization of the capital’s airport, which will contribute to the economic prosperity of the region, attract more tourists, and make Bulgaria a preferred destination.

The investment strategy of SOF Connect envisages the transformation of the capital airport into a five-star regional airport and the construction of a third passenger terminal. Improving the passenger experience, expanding Bulgaria’s aviation connectivity with Europe and the world, the application of green energy, a clean environment and sustainable development are among the main priorities in the modernization strategy of Sofia Airport.

SOF Connect is focused on becoming a leader and example in the sustainable development of the aviation industry. The company implements industry-leading practices such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions from direct airport operations by decarbonizing its fleet and improving facility energy efficiency; energy supply and self-generation of electricity from renewable sources and the provision of sustainable fuel for both land vehicles and aircraft; working with partners and suppliers to promote and enforce sustainable and competitive solutions from companies in the wider ecosystem; reducing waste and increasing recycling, as well as optimizing water use.
Recently the Sofia Airport was certified with Airport Carbon Accreditation Level IV by ACI Europe.

Reducing the harmful impact on the environment is among the priorities of Sofia Airport’s decarbonization plan, through which it commits to achieve carbon neutrality by 2036.
